Becoming A TelemarketerDespite the notions of telemarketers being pushy, inconsiderate sales agents who have nothing better to than to annoy us at the most inconvenient moments, telemarketing is actually a very relevant career opportunity. While many telemarketers work in call centers, there are a growing number of home-based opportunities for telemarketing agents. Working from home allows you to flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends. Job Description Telemarketers provide valuable services to a wide range of clients. They promote or sell goods and services to people and companies by telephone. Their job entails some or all of the following: -Use the telephone to take or make calls to customers -Raise funds or make sales over the phone -Keep records of interested customers and sales -Explain the product or service they are promoting to customers -Ask people to pay their bills -Follow up calls with a letter or further calls -Gather information about customers and conduct polls or surveys -Make appointments for sale representatives -Update the company’s database Becoming a telemarketer doesn’t necessarily require formal education from a post secondary institute but the following skills are beneficial to your successL Patience Every customer is different. Sometimes explaining can take along time and you will need to be focused and patient if you want to make the sale. Companies will usually give you a script to work with but you need to be quick thinking if you want to increase your success rate. You are working with emotions, so you need to appeal to your customers by building rapport and trust, that way they feel comfortable enough to buy over the telephone. Determination Sales is a numbers game, the more people you contact the greater your chances of making more sales. If you want to reach your daily target and get higher commissions you have to be the kind of person that does not give easily regardless of how many “no’s” you get. Communication and listening skills You need to be a persuasive talker. This however, doesn’t mean being pushy. Your goal is to fill a need that a customer may have. Knowledge of the company and products The company will usually provide you with knowledge of the products and services people call about. But in the chance that they don’t, do some reading up on the company and what they have to offer. It will be useful when you have to address customers and introduce the product. Telemarketing often comes with good incentives that help people earn extra money; there really is no cap on what you can earn. Technology is changing the way telemarketing representatives do their jobs. In the past telemarketing agents manually dialed numbers, whereas they now use new technology such as predictive dialing and devices that only connect the call if someone answers the phone. This has improved productivity for telemarketers as they can complete a greater number of calls in less time. Telemarketers are not just “phone hustlers” who bother you during dinner, they make it easier for many companies and customers to purchase the products and services they need. If you are someone who enjoys talking in the phone, is self motivated and has a competitive nature, telemarketing maybe your perfect work at home opportunity.
