Becoming A Product Distributor



A product distributor is someone who buys producers’ products or services and then resells them to other business. In many cases they would sell them directly to their customers.

The following are the general steps to becoming a product distributor.

1.Analyze your current purchasing volumes and discounts to identify situations where you could take advantage of your buying power to act as a distributor.

2.Find producers or manufacturers who would give you exclusive rights to distribute their products in return for your advanced financial support for orders.

3.Find a producer who only wants to handle large orders, but whose products require distribution in small-order lots. This is an opportunity for you to become a distributor and relieve the producer of problems relating to small orders.

4.Find a group of retailers or customers who have to wait for delivery of products from a manufacturer because of distance or production time. You may be able to become a distributor by carrying stock on hand and offering immediate delivery.

5.Look for advertisements under Distributors Wanted in trade magazines, and for advertisements under Business Opportunities in the classified sections of newspapers.

6.Contact manufacturers, read trade publications and attend trade shows to find items without local distribution networks.




Many online companies have an online application to fill out if you are interested in distributing their product; others ask to be contacted via email.

Job Description The duties vary depending on the product. Generally though, product distributors order new stock, collect, sort and bank money made on their run, enter account information into their accounts systems and perform other office administrative duties, organize debt collect, and organize and carry out marketing strategies and promotions.

Requirements
A goods and service license is required to enter this job market. You will also need startup capital; product distribution is often a costly startup business. In order to succeed you will need efficient and effect ordering processes in order to ensure that the customer’s needs are addressed quickly. You will also need to be flexible so you can meet the demands of customers and keep up with marketing trends. Product distributors need to have extensive knowledge about their products and their customers’ requirements.

They also need to know their delivery route so they can get products where it has to be when it has to be there. Good communication skills, customer service skills, sales skills, math skills, and business management skills are also required. Product distributors also need personal qualities in order to be successful which include but are not limited to being reliable, friendly, persuasive, responsible, adaptable and patient.

Post secondary education is not required but having work experience in the retail industry, as a courier or delivery driver, or as a sales representative is advantageous.

Product distributors are self employed and thus their earnings vary depending on the size of their business, customer mix of their business and the time and effort they devote to expanding and maintaining their business. Earnings range from $10,000-63,000 a year, depending on the number of hours they work.
